I’m Ian and I offer hypnotherapy and mental health support in Cambridge and its surrounding areas including Cambourne, Newmarket, Royston, St Neots and Saffron Walden. I believe that you have the strength and resources within you to achieve life-changing results in just a matter of weeks. My goal is to guide and support you in this process for as long as you need me. I am a fully qualified and insured Solution Focused Hypnotherapist and I am registered with several awarding bodies including; The Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, The National Council for Hypnotherapy and The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council. These bodies regulate the hypnotherapy industry to help make sure their associated therapists give the best treatment possible.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a safe, modern type of ‘talking therapy’ that combines the use of psychotherapy and hypnosis. It offers a holistic approach to mental health and wellbeing and has its basis in neuroscience. This makes it particularly effective in treating anxiety and related conditions as the methods used replicate the way your brain works when it is functioning well. I help to enhance your brains natural ability to reduce anxiety and think logically.
With Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we recognise that we can’t change the past therefore we begin with the end in mind. We look at what you want to achieve (the solution) as opposed to what prompted you to seek help (the problem). Often prioritising analysing the problem can lead to other issues being unearthed, leaving little emphasis on actually getting you to a place where you are free from your condition.
During our sessions together we focus all our attention on getting you to be the best version of yourself. To get you to this end destination there is no need for you to recall negative experiences associated with the past. Whilst sometimes in life it can be of benefit to analyse and evaluate situations, in the case of anxiety and related conditions it can be very counterproductive and can create more anxiety.
Can I be hypnotised?
Trance is a very natural state, we go in and out of trance states many times a day, roughly every 6 to 7 minutes. Hypnosis or trance describes a time when we experience a shift in our conscious awareness.
This is very different to what you may have seen in ‘stage hypnosis’ whether live or on the television. Perhaps you can recall having a conversation with a friend of a friend but at the time couldn’t remember their name. Its only later that the name pops into your head. To recall the name, you’ve actually gone into a trance state and your conscious and unconscious minds have worked together to come up with the answer.
If you’ve ever driven a car and ended up at a destination but can’t remember how you got there, that’s because for some of the journey you were in a trance state. You were on autopilot. Your unconscious mind was helping you to drive the car allowing your conscious mind to concentrate on something completely different. When we are relaxed we can also visualise images and reflect on different ideas that maybe useful for us. We use hypnosis at the end of our session together to help your brain work out solutions to your problems. There is no need for you to go into a deep state of hypnosis. I just need you to feel comfortable and relax.
How can hypnotherapy help me change?
Your brain has an amazing ability to change and adapt, this is better known as neuroplasticity. When neuroscience was in its infancy it was thought that our brains were a fixed organ without the capacity to change. We now know this is not the case, our brains have the ability to change and develop well into our twilight years. By getting you to focus on the positive aspects of your life we help to build up an area of your brain called the left pre frontal cortex. This is the positive, problem solving part of your brain. By developing this area of your brain we can help you to view your life more positively, which can lead to a lowering stress and anxiety levels.
Hypnotherapy and mental health support in Cambridge – Conditions treated
You are certainly not alone if you sometimes find life difficult. High levels of stress and anxiety are unfortunately all too common in modern day society. Stress and anxiety can easily be created as a result of the demands placed on us at home and at work. It is estimated that 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem such as anxiety and depression in the UK each year. That’s a staggering 11 million people. With our lives becoming more stressful it is unfortunately unlikely that this number will decrease in the near future.
Hypnotherapy can be used to help people address and overcome many differing problem areas in their lives. It is often used effectively to help people to lower their levels of stress and anxiety, to feel much more positive with their everyday living. Hypnotherapy can be used to change self-limiting thoughts and beliefs, helping to bring back a sense of calmness and control. This in turn can lead to an improvement in mental health as you allow yourself to view your life with a more positive outlook. We spent a lot of time inside our head, thankfully I have had continued success in helping people to make their head space a much calmer and positive place to be.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is extremely versatile, amongst other things it can be used to help people:
- Free themselves from depression
- Improve their sporting performance
- Achieve freedom from anxiety
- Overcome insomnia, PTSD and OCD
- Give up smoking
- Overcome fears and phobias
- Control their anger
- Increase their chances of conception
- Improve their confidence and self-esteem
- Relieve teenage anxiety
- Reduce their levels of performance anxiety
- Manage their weight
- Alleviate the symptoms of IBS and
- Reduce chronic pain.
Mental health and wellbeing support for children in Cambridge
Mental illness is unfortunately all too common in children. Statistics show that 3 in 4 mental illnesses start before the age of 18, with 2 in 4 being evident before the age of 14. The long wait for services such as CAMHS mean that 70% of children are currently not receiving help for their condition, with some waiting for up to 10 years for support with their mental health. My experience from being a teacher for the last 17 years paints a similar picture. Whilst there has without doubt been a rise in the prevalence of children’s mental health conditions, the amount of money going into address them hasn’t, leaving the system over stretched.
Solution focused hypnotherapy offers very quick results, it can be extremely effective in helping children from around the age of 8 upwards to find relief from their condition. As it is outcome and future focused there is never any need for a child to discuss the actual problem concerning them. This allows the child to become engaged in their therapy as they are able to imagine and describe their future when the problem no longer exists.
The solution focused method is in fact so effective, that the NSPCC use it as their approach to improving children’s mental health and wellbeing. You can find out how to use solution focused practices with your child through the following link. Many parents have however, trusted me to help their child to improve their mental health and wellbeing. I have worked with children of many ages to take control of a wide range of different types of anxiety including; phobias, social anxiety, generalised anxiety, disordered eating and OCD.
You can watch an interview with Matt where we discuss his experience of using solution focused hypnotherapy to help his daughter to overcome OCD here. If you would like more information on teenage anxiety please visit the highlighted link.

Online hypnotherapy in Cambridge via Zoom
I conduct my therapy sessions via Zoom so I am able to help people from a wide geographical area. However, I find many of my clients come for hypnotherapy in Cambridge and its surrounding areas including Cambourne, Newmarket, Royston, St Neots and Saffron Walden.
We are by nature creatures of habit, our brain loves repetition. When things are comfortable our brain feels safe and is able to relax more.
The electrical waves in your brain actually change as you begin to relax. What could be more comfortable than sitting back in your favourite arm chair or lying on your bed to take part in your therapy session? Being in a familiar environment may make it possible for you to enter a trance state more quickly.
This means that your brain will have more time to focus on, further absorb and reflect on the things we have discussed during the session.
A number of studies have been conducted comparing the effectiveness of online hypnotherapy to face to face sessions. None of the studies found online hypnotherapy sessions to be less effective, whilst some of them found it to be a more effective method of delivery. This is because you’re more likely to be able to enter a trance state quicker when you feel safe and comfortable in a familiar environment.
As long as you have a good internet connection, a device connected to it and an area in your house where you won’t be disturbed then your therapy session will be just as effective as one conducted face to face.
