“Hi I’m Ian and I know that finding the right therapist can be hard”
It probably started with a Google search, but after sifting through various profiles and websites you started to wonder if you’d ever find the right person to connect with. A person who understands how you’re feeling now and who you can trust to move you forward.
Perhaps you left a couple of messages with a potential match but you never heard back. Perhaps you spoke briefly on the phone, but you realised the type of therapy on offer didn’t align with you and the therapist sounded a bit weird. This whole process can sometimes be enough to make people give up and just accept their life the way it is.
That’s why I wrote this page, to help you see pretty quickly if I might be the person that can help you to change. Every therapist is different and each has their own approach.
Let me explain the type of client that I have great success working with and you can see if we’re likely to be a match.
- They’re currently stuck but haven’t accepted defeat. They know they have the ability to change but they just don’t know HOW to go about it. They trust me to guide them.
- They know that I don’t have a magic wand and even if I did they wouldn’t want me to wave it, because they know they’ll learn so much about themselves on their journey of change.
- They don’t see any benefit in dragging up the past. They appreciate that we can’t change it, so they’re solely focused on moving forwards.
- They’re willing to step out of their comfort zone. They know that change doesn’t happen overnight but they’re willing to push themselves to make it happen.
- They’re done with their current negative mindset and negative talk. A word of warning I will tell you to stop if you start going down that route…..please save that for your hairdresser, pet or house plant….if you’re that way inclined.
If this is you I’d love you to get in touch.
I try to be the same therapist that would appeal to me, someone who’s; supportive, knowledgeable, optimistic, non-judgemental, fun and that I can feel relaxed talking to.
My Story
“I love helping people to change”
At 46 years old I never expected to be made redundant from my job as a PE teacher. Whilst I’d never truly thought I’d found my vocation in teaching, I really did enjoy working with children and seeing them progress.
It soon became apparent that I was both too old and expensive to find another permanent teaching post. I did manage to secure some short-term contracts for the next couple of years but knew that this offered no job security. It was just a sticking plaster.
I’d never really suffered from anxiety or insomnia before as I’d always managed to look on the bright side, but this time was different. The responsibility of being the main provider to my family took its toll. Negative thoughts and self-doubt started to creep in affecting my confidence. I felt trapped.
I’d experienced the benefit of hypnotherapy in the past. After smoking for over 15 years and trying numerous ways to give up, one session of hypnotherapy was all that was needed to help me quit the habit. It was around this time that I met my wife, Eimear. Years later hypnotherapy again played a significant part in my life. Eimear managed to give birth to our sons very calmly using the methods and techniques from the hypnobirthing classes we both attended.
I wasn’t sure what my next career move would be, but I knew I still wanted to help people to make positive changes to their lives. In a chance conversation with my dad, I recalled the experiences of hypnotherapy that had had such a positive effect on my life. It wasn’t long before I made the decision to train as a hypnotherapist.
With time and through using hypnotherapy, my anxiety virtually disappeared. During my training, I became more and more amazed at the versatility of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and its effectiveness in helping people with a variety of anxiety-related conditions to thrive. I loved hearing my clients telling me week by week how much their lives were changing for the better. I knew I’d found my new career and made the decision to work towards becoming a full-time therapist.
I’ve completed my journey from feeling trapped, anxious and full of self-doubt to being able to look forward to each day with positivity.
I’m Ian Murton HPD, DSFH, AfSFH Reg, NCH Reg, CNHC Reg. I am proud that my training, qualifications and experience have meant that I meet the strict criteria required to be an approved therapist for Anxiety UK. Supporting people while they make positive changes in their lives is what I do best!
